Final Fantasy Type-0 Battle System
ATB (Active Time Battle) System

Final Fantasy Type-Zero’s battle system is basically super high speed ATB (Active Time Battle) that is reminiscent of Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, which Hajime Tabata, director of both games, had a big influence in. It's a system where the player waits for the time gauge to fill up before attacking. Where Crisis Core come into play are its fast battles, meaning that the player won't have to wait that much between actions.

Forming Parties
In Final Fantasy Type-0, the player will form parties of three and will make use of weapons, magic and abilities. The key to the battle system is switching off between the three characters in your party. You control one character at a time and can switch off to the other two. If one character dies, one of the students in reserve comes into battle. When all characters have been killed, the game is over.
Preemptive Strikes
In preemptive strikes, MP consumption is lowered to 0 and party members gain the Aura buff. Surprise attacks on the other hand give you debuffs like Stop.
HUD

Ability Gauge
The circle, triangle, square and x buttons correspond to abilities. When you use abilities, you build up your Ability Gauge. When unleashing an attack, it depletes the Ability Gauge.
Phantoma

Phantoma is a special system in Type-0 where the characters absorb energy from their fallen foes. When you absorb it, you recover some of your MP. Phantoma is also used for customizing and upgrading your magic. The recovery in MP is determined by the type of Phantoma, identified by the color of the Lock On sight. When absorbing Phantoma, a shock wave may appear which will either damage or kill enemies.
Enemies

There will be a variety of different kinds of enemies that some will either flee, surrender or you can converse with them to get information. You can make the enemies surrender by defeating the enemy commander. You can avoid unnecessary battles by going after the commander first. Some commanders may prove to be powerful and difficult to defeat so you might have to come up with a different strategy and decide on an appropriate order to killing off your foes.
Classic Enemies
Classic enemies from past Final Fantasy games will be returning such as Cactuar, Malboro, Tonberry and Iron Giant.

Kill and Break Sights

Kill Sight System is a system where connecting an attack while a red target was displayed would result in instant death on the enemy.

If you attack a target while a yellow target appears, the character will deal massive amounts of damage.
Gunshin
Type-0 will have summons that are called, "Gunshin" (God of War) and are like weapons. Meaning that they are basically items that the army has in stock. If your summon dies, this is not a problem since there are plenty in stock.
Players select the Gunshin that they want to take into battle. When you call out a Gunshin, you take full control of it.
When using a Gunshin, the player who summoned the beast sacrifices themselves and can no longer be used in the remainder of the battle.
Pressing "circle" and "triangle" buttons will activate the summon. These buttons will appear on screen, placed beside a icon of the summon brought into battle.
Here are the summons below.

Trinity Attack's are where three party members all team up to attack a single enemy. This can be used multiple times too. Some examples are Straight Flash, Dead Ensemble and Crisis Arrow for Ace, Deuce and Trey and Hornet, Linear Rush and Zero Distance Shot for Nine, King and Queen.
Magic
The magic system in Type-0 is different from other Final Fantasy games. Magic is basically used like weapons. Tabata says, "They're like guns. You can fire away like you would a gun." All characters can use magic as well. While weapons can be used in battle, magic is the main focus of power.

Basically, you can charge a magic spell. When you hold a button down for example, Fire charges up to Fira. If you customize a spell, like Fire for example. You can customize its strength, MP Usage, Cooldown, Range, and Speed. Spells like "Fire ST" and "Thunder MW" are names of spells that have been customized by the player.

There are three forms of elemental spells, namely fire, lightning and ice. There is also white magic and special magic as well. Also... Each element has 5 different spell variations with their advantages and disadvantages. They are called Shotgun, Rifle, Bomb, Missile and Rocket Launcher.

SHG (Shotgun)
This type spreads at multiple height levels. Despite its limited range, it is most effective against close combat.

RF (Rifle)
This type fires straight towards the enemies. It has a longer range than SHG but the scope of range is narrower.

BOM (Bomb)
This type is effective when clearing smaller and quicker enemies by dealing splash damage but has a limited range.

MIS (Missile)
This type chases after the enemy before releasing its magic. The stronger versions of the spell will expand to deal splash damage on the surroundings.

ROK (Rocket Launcher)
This type when used allows the player to set a target sight on a opponent. The spell will then fire at the targeted direction and deal splash damage to surrounding opponents upon explosion.
Special Arts
Each character has a specialty weapon and they gain unique abilities when using these weapons.

Agito Points (AP)
When your characters level up, they will receive Agito Points (AP). You use these points to learn new abilities. Here are some examples.

Ace Using Canon Laser
This sends out a laser, which will stay in place for a brief period of time.

Queen Using Energy Bomb
This creates a magic pattern on the ground and then explodes, damaging all enemies it touches. Hold down a button to increase it's strength.

Nine Using Throw Lancer
Continually target enemies and toss lances at them.

Machina Using Sword Field
Machina draws out two rapiers and spins around, dealing damage to surrounding enemies. You can move him too.

Rem Using Boomerang Dager
Rem throws her two daggers that act like a boomerang and then return to her. Deals repeated damage to enemies.
Game Over
If you’re defeated on the World Map you’ll be transported back in to town. From the main menu you can choose to return to the Peristylium, but this appears to consume free time.
